Settings and smart pause

  • A new Settings button in the footer opens a settings window. Changes count at once and are remembered in this browser, also when you start a new game.
  • The game can now stop by itself when you have a decision to make: a vessel you steer yourself arrives in port or leaves dry dock, or an engine failure or a storm gives you a choice. It stops at that very moment, however long you were away, and the ship log says why. Press Space or P to carry on.
  • “Pause for decisions when the game is in the background” is on by default. It counts when you have been in another tab or window since the game last ticked.
  • “Also pause when the game is in front” is off by default. Switch it on to stop at every decision while you are looking at the game.
  • Vessels on a trade route look after themselves and never pause the game.

Money in, money out

  • The month chart in Finances → History now shows three bars for every month: money earned (solid green), money spent (hatched copper) and the net result (blue outline, hanging below the line when it is a loss). The bars differ in pattern as well as colour.
  • Under the chart you read the three figures for the selected month, what the money was spent on (transport costs with delays and repairs, late penalties and dry docks) and any vessels you bought or sold that month. Use the arrow keys or the mouse to move between months.
  • A new month-by-month table sits under the charts, newest month first, with a total row. Net and the change in capital have a + or − sign and a colour. Vessels bought and sold are listed apart under Investments: they change your capital but are not part of the net result.
  • Finances → Overview shows earned, spent and net for the month you are in, next to the net of the last 30 days.

Clearer map

  • The map no longer carries a big title and a slogan. Only the small heading “Operations / World map” is left, with an ⓘ button beside it that explains what you can do on the map.
  • The fleet overview now sits at the top left, right under the heading, with the ship log below it and the Key at the bottom right. The zoom buttons stay at the top right, and the whole west side of the map is easier to see.
  • On a low screen the open fleet overview and ship log share the height and scroll inside instead of running into each other.
  • Choosing a vessel from the fleet overview (or from anywhere else) while zoomed in now moves the map so that the vessel is not hidden behind the overview. Los Angeles has its name to the right of the dot, so the overview does not cover it.

Wear, weather and breakdowns

  • Vessels now wear down as they sail. Condition falls with every sea day, about 1 point per 10 days at Standard speed, roughly 30 % less at Eco and 25 % more at Full. Below 85 % a vessel burns more fuel (half a percent per point), and the freight market shows it in the estimate, for example “+6 % fuel from condition 72 %”.
  • Vessels age and change value. Age grows with game time since you bought the vessel, and its value falls with age and rises with condition, so fleet value, sale price and your wealth in Finances follow it. Right after a purchase the value equals the price.
  • Six ports have a shipyard: Busan and Shanghai (cheap), Singapore and Jebel Ali (mid), Rotterdam (expensive but fast) and Los Angeles (expensive and slow). The port card describes the yard in words.
  • Dry dock: an idle vessel in a port with a shipyard can be docked from Fleet or from its card on the map. You see the new condition, the price, the days and the ready time before you confirm in two steps. A dry dock restores the vessel to its maximum condition (100 % minus 1 point per year of age, never below 80 %). The vessel cannot sail, take cargo or be sold while in dry dock, and the price is booked once when the yard is done.
  • Trade routes have a new setting, Maintain below (70 % by default, or Never). A vessel on the route that is in a port with a shipyard and below the limit docks instead of taking cargo and then carries on from the same stop. The decision log says so, and the route warns you if it has no shipyard.
  • Fleet shows each vessel’s condition, can sort by it and has a Needs maintenance filter. Vessels in dry dock have their own colour and a double-ring marker on the map, and the Key explains them. The ship log warns when a vessel wears below its limit and tells you when a dry dock starts and ends.
  • Finances shows dry dock maintenance as a cost in the overview, the monthly history, per vessel and in the transactions.
  • Voyages can be delayed. Ships queue at anchor before a berth and at the entrance of the Suez and Panama canals, and storms hold them in the North Atlantic and North Pacific in winter, in the West Pacific in typhoon season, in the Arabian Sea during the monsoon, off the Cape of Good Hope and in the Caribbean in hurricane season. The biggest ports queue the most.
  • Delay risk is shown before you decide. The freight market and the ballast voyage list each route and speed with its risks (for example “Storm risk 22 % · 8–36 h · North Atlantic” and “Queue at Rotterdam: Moderate, 6–24 h”) and an expected risk cost that is already deducted from the estimated net. Offers with a noticeable risk carry a mark in the list, and the default choice, the trade routes’ minimum net and their decision log use the net after risk.
  • Delays are decided when a vessel sails, so the same game always gives the same weather, whatever the speed. You only learn of a delay when it starts: the ship log warns “is held by a storm in the North Atlantic, 18 h. New ETA …”, the vessel card, Fleet and Operations show the reason, the hours left and the new ETA, and the vessel lies still on the map until it is over.
  • A port card shows the queue now and for the next seven days. The map can show the storm areas that are in season as hatched fields, and the Key explains them and switches them off.
  • Delays cost the vessel’s running costs while it lies still, and a storm wears the vessel a little more. Finances shows the cost of delays as its own figure in the overview, the monthly history, per vessel and per route, and lists the delays on each settlement.
  • Engines can fail. The chance of a breakdown grows with every point of condition below 85 %, with every year of age above 10 and quickly with speed, so Full is riskier than Standard and a worn vessel is far riskier than a well kept one: a new vessel on a 20 day voyage has a few percent, a worn old one at Full can have more than one in ten. It is shown before you decide as “Breakdown risk 4 % · 18–36 h · repair $15,000–45,000” with an ⓘ that explains what drives it, and the expected repair is already deducted from the estimated net.
  • A breakdown and a storm give you a choice, and the game never stops for it. For an engine failure you choose between Repair at sea (the standard: the vessel lies still for 18–36 hours and the repair is paid on arrival) and Continue at reduced speed (no stop and no repair, but 70 % of the speed for the rest of the voyage and 3–5 points of extra wear). In a storm you choose between Heave to (the standard: wait it out) and Push through (about 40 % of the delay, but three times the wear). If you do nothing, the standard choice stands.
  • The decision box sits on top of the vessel’s card on the map and in Fleet while the choice is open: what happened, both options side by side with the new ETA, whether the deadline holds, the cost, the extra wear and the estimated net, which one is chosen and how long you can still change it (12 game hours). One click switches, and you can switch back until the time is up. A change counts from the moment you click, so the vessel never jumps: a vessel that stops for repair and is switched to reduced speed sails on from where it is, and the other way round it stops where it is for the whole repair.
  • The ship log warns when a breakdown or a storm begins, names the standard choice and says until when you can change it (“Ocean Pioneer has an engine failure. Repair at sea is chosen; you can change it until 14:00 UTC.”); click it to select the vessel. A vessel that waits for a decision has a copper “!” on the map, comes first in the fleet overview and at the top of Operations, which also counts the decisions. Vessels on a trade route use the standard choice, the decision log says so, and you can still choose for them while the window is open.
  • Finances shows repairs at sea as their own figure (overview, monthly history, per vessel and per route), and each settlement names the incidents and the option that counted.
  • The ship log now also reports a dry dock that starts when you assign a worn vessel to a trade route.
  • Saves from earlier versions cannot be opened: the game starts anew with a message.

More room

  • The speed control (Pause, 1×, 10×, 50×) has moved up to the top bar, between the company name and your capital. The ⓘ button beside SIMULATION explains how long a game hour takes at each speed, the shortcuts, and that the game starts paused when you come back.
  • On a phone the speed control stays fixed at the bottom of the screen as a slim bar, with the ⓘ button beside it.
  • The simulation bar is gone. The save status and Reset demo now sit in the footer, which is one line on a desktop, so the lists and the map get more height.
  • Each view’s subtitle is replaced by an ⓘ button beside its title. Click it for a short description of what you can do in the view; click elsewhere or press Escape to close it. Escape closes only the box and does not take you back to the map.
  • Smaller view titles and a tighter header, so the lists and tables get more room.

Maritime atlas

  • A new look: a deep sea-green palette, copper for the view you are in and for decisions, serif headings and larger, clearer text. The top bar, command bar and simulation bar are redesigned.
  • Freight market, Trade routes, Fleet, Operations, Finances and Ship Market are now full views that replace the map, instead of pop-up windows. Use the buttons in the command bar to switch, and Back to map or Escape to return to the map. Escape does nothing while you are typing in a field or editing a trade route.
  • Each view remembers where you left it: filters, sorting and the chosen offer, route or vessel, the Finances section, and the map’s zoom, position and selected vessel or port.
  • The simulation bar with Pause, 1×, 10× and 50× is always at the bottom, in every view. The shortcuts 1, 2, 3, P and Space work everywhere.
  • Switching view moves keyboard focus to the new view’s heading and announces it to screen readers. On a phone the navigation scrolls sideways.
  • The freight market is now a list with a detail panel. Pick an offer with the mouse or the arrow keys and see its estimated net result, your route and speed choices, the costs and the deadline in one place, then accept it. Estimated net is the main figure for comparing offers, with net per day beside it, and the Sort by menu has the other orders.
  • Trade routes are now cards with a detail panel: the stops in order, the vessels on the route with their status and arrival, the route’s result so far, and Edit, Pause and Delete. A summary strip shows active routes, assigned vessels and the next arrival.
  • The map has a fleet overview: the vessels that need you first (idle and late ones), then the next arrivals, with a Find cargo button for an idle vessel and a link to the whole fleet. An idle vessel’s card puts Find cargo at the top. On a phone the fleet overview, ship log and key are three small folded bars at the bottom of the map.
  • A ship log replaces the stacked message cards. Routine messages (arrivals, departures, purchases) are one line each in the log, newest first, with game time; click a line to select the vessel. The log keeps the last 50 and shows how many are unread. Only warnings and errors pop up: late deliveries, a vessel idle for three days, and automation sailing in ballast.
  • Vessels on the map now have colours: green for cargo, blue for ballast, amber for idle. Vessels on a trade route use the route’s own colour, with a hollow marker while waiting for cargo and grey when the route is paused. The selected vessel gets a white ring, the status is also in the marker shape and the tooltip, and a Key explains it. The same colours appear as dots beside vessel names in Fleet, Operations, Finances and Trade routes.
  • Fleet is now a list with a detail panel, like the freight market. Every vessel has a picture, a status tag (Ready, At sea, Waiting or Paused), where it is or is heading, its capacity, speed and job, and its next action. A strip shows vessels ready for cargo, vessels at sea, fleet capacity and fleet value. Filter by status, search, or use the Sort by menu.
  • The selected vessel’s panel has a large picture, the main action (Find cargo, View voyage or Manual control), Show on map, Assign to trade route, the specifications, the voyage and contract under way, and Rename and Sell.
  • Ship Market shows each vessel as a picture card with its type, a short description, specifications, delivery port and price, and says at once whether it is available, owned, sold or too expensive. Ocean Titan and Green Meridian show a drawn placeholder until their pictures are ready.
  • Operations has a summary of vessels without work, vessels at sea, the next arrival and late voyages, and shows upcoming arrivals and vessels without work as two lists side by side, each with the action for the row.
  • Finances has the new look: key figures on light panels with capital, fleet value and wealth highlighted, the two charts in panels of their own, sortable tables where sold vessels and deleted routes are clearly marked, and a row of buttons to choose the section.
  • Fixed: editing the minimum net of a trade route could stop the route from being saved.

  • Clicking a port name now opens the port card when the map is zoomed in, just like clicking the dot.
  • When you pick a port or vessel on a zoomed map, the map moves so it is not hidden behind the detail card.

Deeper markets

  • Every port belongs to a region, and some trade flows pay better than others. Cargo from East Asia to Europe and North America and from Southeast Asia to Europe is strong, while the way back (backhaul) pays little.
  • Freight rates rise and fall in a slow cycle of about 90 game days. Each offer shows its rate as High ▲, Normal or Low ▼, and ports ship more freight towards regions that pay well right now. The same game time always gives the same offers.
  • New Net/day column in the freight market: the estimated net profit per game day of sailing. Sort on it to compare a quick trip with a long, rich one.
  • The port card shows the three outgoing regions that pay best right now, and can unfold a graph of their rates over the last 60 game days.
  • Choose your speed when you sail: Eco (75 % of top speed), Standard (90 %) or Full. Slow steaming burns far less fuel, but the trip takes longer and may miss the deadline. The freight market compares every route and speed side by side, and ballast voyages let you pick a speed too.
  • A ship burns less fuel the emptier it is, and port and canal fees depend on the size of the ship: big ships pay more per call but less per TEU.
  • Trade routes pick the best route and speed for each contract and name them in the decision log, for example at Eco 15.0 kn.
  • Finances now has five sections: Overview, History, Vessels, Trade routes and Transactions.
  • Overview shows capital, fleet value, wealth, net over the last 30 days, net per day and how much of the time your fleet sails with cargo.
  • History charts capital and wealth over time and the net result of every month. Move over a chart or use the arrow keys to read the values.
  • Vessels and Trade routes show voyages, revenue, costs, penalties, net, net per day at sea and utilisation for every vessel (also sold ones) and every route (also deleted ones). Click a column heading to sort.
  • Games saved before this version start over with a message, as the save format changed. Your old save stays in the browser.

Easier speed control

  • Change the game speed without closing anything: every overlay now has Pause, 1×, 10× and 50× in its header, together with the game time.
  • Keyboard shortcuts work everywhere, also with an overlay open: 1, 2 and 3 set 1×, 10× and 50×, and P or Space pause and resume at your last speed. They stay out of the way while you type.
  • Click an empty part of the map to close the port or vessel card. Dragging the map does not.
  • Find cargo in … on a vessel card now opens the freight market with that vessel selected.

Global sea lanes & operations

  • All 15 ports can now trade with each other. Routes between every pair of ports follow a hand-drawn network of sea lanes through straits, capes and canals, and never cross land or sail through another port.
  • Suez and Panama are real canals with a fixed fee: $180,000 for Suez and $150,000 for Panama. The fee is part of the cost estimate, the settlement, the Finances details and the expanded freight row, which also shows the route, such as via Suez Canal.
  • Every port now has outgoing freight in every offer batch: three offers per port to different destinations, and at least two of them fit Ocean Pioneer.
  • Sail without cargo can go to any other port, sorted by sailing time, and trade routes can use any port.
  • The map shows the whole sea lane network as faint lines.
  • When the shortest way goes through Suez or Panama, you can sail the long way round instead. Expand a freight offer to compare both routes side by side: distance, sailing time, fuel, canal fee, operations, expected late penalty, net profit and whether the deadline holds. The best one is selected for you.
  • Sail without cargo shows both routes with sailing time and cost when a destination has two, and picks the cheapest by default.
  • The freight table shows which route an offer uses (such as via Suez Canal), and the vessel card, Fleet and Finances show the route actually sailed.
  • Trade route vessels pick the more profitable route for every contract, sail ballast the cheapest way, and name the route in their decisions, such as via Cape of Good Hope.
  • New Operations overlay: see every vessel at sea with its route, ETA, cargo, deadline, expected delay and penalty, and what happens on arrival, and every vessel without work with how many offers it can take and the best expected net.
  • The new Operations button in the command bar shows how many vessels are without work and when the next one arrives. From the overlay you can show a vessel on the map, find cargo for an idle vessel, or open the trade route of a waiting vessel.
  • Saved games from earlier versions start over with a new game, as the save format changed for canal fees.

Trade routes

  • New Trade routes overlay: build a fixed loop of 2–8 ports, set a minimum net per leg and a maximum wait, and pause, edit or delete routes at any time.
  • Assign a vessel to a route from the Fleet overview. It then picks the most profitable cargo to the next stop by itself, waits for better offers, or sails in ballast once its maximum wait has passed.
  • Follow each vessel in its detail card: route, next stop, status and its latest decisions with the reasons behind them. You get a message when a route vessel departs.
  • Take Manual control whenever you like. While a vessel is on a route, you cannot give it manual cargo or ballast orders or sell it, and the freight market tells you why.
  • The Fleet table has a new Control column showing Manual or the route name.

Pause

  • The game stops at the moment a decision is due if you have been in another tab or window since it last ticked.
